ARKLink Collection Development Task Force

                                        People in attendance were:   Amanda Moore, Ann Dixon, Bob Yehl, Maureen James-Barnes and Peter Picerno.

Bob Yehl spoke to Scott Schmidt at Midwest Library Service about consortial purchasing.  Scott indicated that Midwest would be willing to work with ARKLink.

Members of the Task Force created a list of 12 vendors commonly used by academic libraries in Arkansas.  Members agreed to investigate which of these vendors work with consortia, the bid process with each vendor, how cooperative purchasing works in the consortia with which the vendors work, and vendor options on ordering and billing.  Once the information is gathered, Amanda Moore will pull together a report of the Task Force's findings.

Members discussed several electronic journal services, and Amanda Moore is investigating the possibilities for ARKLink access to services such as JSTOR, Project Muse, OCLC's Electronic Collections Online, Blackwell's Electronic Journal Navigator, Academic Press' IDEAL, Stanford University's Highwire.

Several possible methods of cooperative collection anaylsis and development were discussed.  The Task Force identified several prerequisites necessary for cooperative collection development.  These are:

• A union catalog with holdings of all member libraries
• User initiated interlibrary loan
• Across the board borrowing privileges
• A courier service to provide easy access to materials
• Designated staff to perform collection analysis of member libraries and to serve as a repository for member libraries and to serve as a repository for member libraries' collection development statements and policies.
